Great Balls of Light!
I stumbled upon the website http://www.denissmith.com.au of Dennis Smith in the land of down under. He has an amazing story of finding photography to help relieve the stressors of his job to making the transition to photography as a career. In the process he has created a new style of painting with light, Balls of Light. If you haven’t seen any of images you should take a moment, smell the rose and take in their beauty.
I was so inspired that I thought I would give it a shot. How hard could it be, set up the camera on a tripod, set for a long exposure, spin a light around… Well it is a lot harder than it looks to get everything correct. My first few attempts didn’t work at all. Finally I got one image that at least looked something like a ball of light. Creating one that has a single point at each axis has proved to be most difficult to reproduce. I am going to try and create more of these images as time and my sleep cycle permit and see if over time I can perfect the technique.
